Cardigan Town Council

The history of Cardigan Town Council goes back to 1653 although the council
in its present form dates from 1973 when most of Cardigan Borough Council’s
activities were assumed by Dyfed (and in 1996 by Ceredigion). The Town Council’s
Chairman, who is elected by the councilors each year, serves as the town’s
Mayor, carrying out the role’s traditional duties including the Mayor Making
Ceremony, the Mayor’s civic service, Remembrance Sunday, the Agricultural Show,
Barley Saturday and the Mayor’s Ball, as well as supporting the town’s various
clubs and societies. The role of the Mayor dates back to 1394 when the burgesses
of Cardigan were given the right to elect a Mayor by Richard II. The current
mayor is the 614th.

The Town Council is the trustee of the King George V Charity and has overall
responsibility for the upkeep and management of the playing fields, home to
our Rugby, Football and Bowls clubs . The council has other responsibilities
including some lighting, bus shelters and pathways around the town which
includes hanging baskets and planters and has recently taken responsibility
for funding the town’s CCTV system. Twice a year the council provides grants
to support local clubs and societies and provides financial assistance to local
institutions and events including Gwyl Fawr Aberteifi, Hanes Aberteifi, Theatr
Mwldan and Menter Aberteifi. The Town Council advises Ceredigion on planning
applications and other local issues and it holds a formal meeting on the first
Tuesday of each month.
